Following a record-breaking April, where Taff-Ely Foodbank supported over 350 local people facing crisis, May has also been a busier month than expected. This month, Taff-Ely Foodbank has provided 240 emergency food parcels, almost exactly on par with May 2025 and higher than May 2024, demonstrating a consistently high level of need across the years and a concerningly high level of need locally in 2026.
This included 78 food parcels provided for children, especially worrying as the May half-term brought with it reduced price meals at numerous supermarkets and reduced cost travel in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
This also comes as Ofgem announces a significant rise in the energy price cap, which will undoubtedly put additional pressure on local people facing hardship. We expect this rise to have a particularly noticeable impact on the number of people coming to the foodbank in Autumn and Winter, as the weather cools and many begin to turn their heating back on.
This is why we continue to call on the Welsh and UK governments to take significant action to reduce hardship and ensure everyone can afford the essentials. As so many people continue to struggle with the essentials, we continue to call for an essentials guarantee in Universal Credit.
