As we approach the mid-point of 2026, it is important to reflect on the first six months of the year and what they mean for hunger and hardship in Taff-Ely.
Since January 1st, 2026, Taff-Ely Foodbank has fulfilled 689 food vouchers, providing emergency food for 1,638 people, including 577 children. This represents approx. a 5% increase in the number of people needing support when compared to the first six months of 2025, and it makes this our busiest start to the calendar year since the coronavirus pandemic. As the cost of living crisis continues to impact household finances, particularly with the recent rise in the cost of fuel, it is clear that the causes of hunger and hardship are not being reduced locally.
Meanwhile, we have seen a drop in donations. We're immensely grateful to have received 11,521kg in food donations so far this year - without our supporters, whether they be businesses, community groups, or individuals, we would not be able to do the work we do. However, this does represent approx. a 3% decrease in the amount of food donated to us by the public - the squeeze on household finances has impacted everyone, leaving many in a more difficult position and understandably impacting the amount people can donate.
Neither of these statistics tells a full story alone, but together they paint a concerning picture - an increase in need and a decrease in donations add an additional challenge to our work. While we are confident we will be able to continue supporting anyone in our community facing hunger and hardship, we encourage anyone who is able to support our vital work to do so.
If you already support us, thank you. If you would like to support us, you can do so by donting money or food here.
